Portland, Rivers, and Mountains
Portland lies where the Willamette River flows (S-N) into the Columbia River (E-W) between the Cascade Range (to the East) and the Coast Range (to the West, along the Pacific Coast).
Portland is about 60 miles (90 km) inland from the Pacific Ocean.
Mt. Hood, in Cascade Range about 50 mi (80 km ESE) of Portland is 11,235 ft (3424 m) high; we think it’s extinct.
Then again, until 1980, we thought Mt. St. Helens was extinct. Mt. St. Helens is 53 mi (85 km) NE of Portland.
The green bump in the top photo is Mt. Tabor, 630 ft (192 m), an extinct volcano within the Portland city limits.
