Metropolitan Area Express (MAX) Light Rail System

• Started in 1986

• Now consists of 44 mi (73 km) of lines

• 126 light-rail vehicles (LRVs), mostly made by Siemens in California

• MAX LRVs were the first modern low-floor railcars in North America (1997)

• Airport service began Sept. 10, 2001 (!!)

• MAX has one underground station, 260 ft (79 m) below Washington Park. This is the deepest station in North America. Down below, core samples in clear tube illustrate the geologic epochs of the mountain.
